Blah.

That about sums up how I’m feeling about the Mariners right now. They can’t pitch (at least not the starters) and they can’t hit. Because of these two factors, they can’t win. And just a few weeks ago, they were exciting. Now, they are just blah.

How does it get fixed? Well, I’m not an expert, but getting rid of Jeff Weaver is one thing they could do. Calling up Adam Jones is another. Oh, and the ever popular option of firing Hargrove is sounding pretty good again too.

My birthday’s coming up, guys. Could you try a little harder, please? Thanks.

UPDATE: After tonight’s 7-0 pounding of the Pirates, I feel better. Maybe I should write caustic posts like this more often. I should point out, though, that while Jeff Weaver threw a complete-game 4-hit shutout, he did so against a rather poor National League team at SAFECO Field. Perform like this against Oakland or at Fenway, Jeff, and then we’ll talk. For now, I still think you have no business being on our roster.

Stories from Denver

I was in Denver last week for a couple days for a confererence for work. It was actually fairly worthwhile as far as conferences go, but not particularly interesting for anything but work-related issues. However, there were a couple fun bits.

My Father Would be So Proud…

Yesterday, I got my first flat tire while driving Josh to the airport. We were able to make it to the cell phone waiting lot, where a very nice man helped us put on the spare. He actually did do most of the work, although I remembered how to jack up the car. Also, apparently I am not smart enough to get my own hubcaps off, which is a bit of a bruiser to the ol’ ego. However, the spare got on all right, Josh got to his flight in time, and I got myself safely back to a Les Schwab (because the spare is not for driving on, it’s for getting to a place where the tire can be fixed. See, Dad, I *was* paying attention). They patched the tire and put it back on for me, so that I wouldn’t look silly trying to get the spare off. And they did said services for free, which was quite nice. Also, Les Schwab has a free beef promotion (didn’t apply for me this time) which is just cool. Beef and Tires. Awesome. I recommend them for all your tire needs, although you might try the grocery store first for beef needs.

So anyway, a fun little adventure that turned out all right in the end. And now I know the secret of getting my own hubcaps off, so that’s a plus.

A minus (and something completely different): why on earth are the Mariners still letting Jeff Weaver pitch? Seriously, the man is incompetent and should not be on the team. DFA him already, and just eat the 8 million you’re paying him.

Second Game Live: I Miss Edgar

Posted by Adrienne on June 4, 2007 under Mariners | No Comments

Last Saturday’s game was a much more fun game to see than the last one I went to. Most importantly, there was a Mariner win (M’s 5, Texas 4), which is my goal for all the games I go to. But the whole reason we went to this *particular* game was to see Edgar.

Edgar Martinez, that is. I’m on a first name basis with him (like much of the city) because he is my favorite player; I even own a t-shirt with his name and number on. It was Edgar-gets-into-the-Mariner-Hall-of-Fame night, complete with a special pre-game ceremony involving the front-office yahoos, Edgar’s family, and the three other Mariner HOF members (Alvin Davis, who you may remember from my Jackie Robinson post; Dave “Fly Away” Niehaus, the longtime Mariner radio announcer; and Jay Buhner, or “Bone” as he is still affectionately known to all who used to sit in the right field section of the Kingdome). There were also some neat tributes to Edgar on the video screen, including old timey pics of Edgar from the early 90s with his funky mustache, nice things said about him by famous ballplayers and managers (including Griffey Jr, Don Maddingly and Joe Torre), and The Double, which was shown 5 separate times and I cried every time. Yes, I am a sap. So it was tribute game for Edgar, and the M’s pulled out a win, which was pretty sweet.
