I do not believe the 2007 Seattle Mariners are a championship-caliber team.
Don’t misunderstand me: I want them to win. I want them to go all the way. But I don’t think they can. And what brought it home to me was the game I saw on Tuesday against the thrice-accursed Angels.
There was excitement at SAFECO on Tuesday. There were visions of another AL West title banner hanging over those right field seats. There was an awesome bottom of the first inning, in which I practically wore a hole in the concrete in front of my seat from jumping up and down so much. And then it all came crashing down.

On Monday night, I closed up the library, then booked it to our car. We raced down to the ballpark, grabbed some Ivar’s, and slid into our seats high in the 300 level behind home plate, just in time to catch the first pitch of the most satisfying game I’ve been to all year long. It was a well-hyped game; two quality Venezuelan pitchers going against each other, and the Mariners in the midst of a playoff race and looking to gain some ground on the Angels. But the game definitely lived up to the hype.

We might go and see the Mariners take on the Twins on Monday, which would feature Cy Young Winner Johan Santana for the Twins against mighty King Felix Hernandez for the Mariners. This would be my first time seeing Felix this year, and in the middle of a pennant race, no less. Wow! I’m getting excited just thinking about it! Let’s Go You M’s!

Our first anniversary was a couple weeks ago, and so we went to the ballpark. We had a great time; I hope all of our anniversaries are as fun. It was Turn Back the Clock Day, and we all pretended it was 1977. They played 70s music and had a 70s costume contest, but the best part was that the M’s and A’s both wore retro uniforms. Barry Bonds is now the all-time home run leader; he hit his 756th career home run tonight.
I myself was rooting for Barry to hit it. I know about all the steroid allegations and about people not liking him because he’s not likeable, and to all of that, I say, “You think what you want.” I think that Bonds was under intense pressure, not just this year, but in previous years, and wouldn’t you be a little snippy if you had people shoving microphones in your face everyday? I also think that one of the greatest things about our country is that a person is innocent until proven guilty.
It was a beautiful home run. Everybody in the park knew it was a homer as soon as it hit the bat. I really appreciated what Hank Aaron had to say; his video message was sincere and profound. I echo his sentiments: “let this record inspire others to go out an achieve their own dreams.” I also appreciated what Bonds said after the home run. He thanked the fans, his teammates, his family, and the Washington Nationals, the opposing team of the night. It was simple and classy. Bonds cried when he mentioned his dad. He’s a human being, and he has achieved something great. It’s something I can stand up and cheer for.
