Mr. Gobble Cake

I think we called it Mr. Gobble Cake, but I don’t recall for certain. Adrienne sketched a turkey for me, which I used as the basis for decorating the cake. Unfortunately, everyone ate so much “real food” and the other desserts present were much more enticing, so no one had much cake. But everyone thought it was neat, and felt bad cutting it up to eat it (another reason they didn’t eat much). And yes, those are M&Ms for eyes!

The SPU Women’s soccer team plays in the National Semi-Final in Alabama Thursday afternoon (11/29) against Franklin Pierce.  It’s at 3pm PST, and presumably there will be an audio broadcast of the game online (part way down the page under Division II Women’s Soccer).

If they win that (which they are certainly favored to do), they will play in the championship on Saturday at 10am PST.  I’ve gathered that will be broadcast on CSTV (College Sports Television), but I don’t know anyone who has that, so I imagine there may be another audio broadcast online.

Adrienne and I had the opportunity to watch their final game here in Seattle a week and a half ago.  It was a national quarterfinal match against Incarnate Word, a team from San Antonio who may have felt a little out of their element in the rain that came down through much of the first half.   Despite an early scare where UIW moved the ball up the field and got a shot on goal, SPU quickly recovered by scoring twice in the first five minutes.  SPU clearly dominated the rest of the game (outshooting them by about 20-2), but there was no more scoring until the final 5 minutes when SPU scored twice more.  The final 4-0 was the same score we saw when we watched their first match of the year back in September.  Altogether they’re 23-0 and ranked #2 in the country behind Grand Valley State, who they will likely see in the final.

Doodle Day

Here’s another of my little doodles:

Candle

My mother had a candleholder that looked like this and it was made of wood. I always liked it; it looked like it belonged as a movie or stage prop from a period piece of some kind. Once or twice I tried reading by candlelight, like they did in olden days. It didn’t work very well.

I usually doodle in pencil, and I like to try and shade the drawings, although I’m usually not satisfied with the shading I do. This one looked okay though. And I’m pretty proud of the shape of the flame and the dried wax on the side of the candle.

Thanksgiving time!

Woohoo!

This is me writing a blog post.  Mostly I’m doing this because I have a few minutes to do so, sitting here at Adrienne’s desk at the library, waiting for it to close so we can drive down to Portland for the next few days.  Actually, we’ll stop for dinner at the Old Spaghetti Factory first to wait out the traffic.

And I’m also writing because I’ve been meaning to for about 3 months.  I have several ideas to post about, I just need to sit down and figure out what exactly I want to say about them.  These topics include my Fantasy Football team, the Packers, random things I’ve found on the internet over the past 6-8 months that I keep forgetting to post about, and probably several other things.

Anyway, this should be a fun Thanksgiving weekend.  Tomorrow morning the Packers play the Lions, which 3 months ago would have been expected to be a boring game.  On the contrary, it should be a good game–probably the most meaningful Thanksgiving game Detroit’s had in a while, even if it’s not quite a big a matchup as it appeared just two weeks ago (when the Packers and Lions were 7-1 and 6-2, respectively, instead of 9-1 and 6-4).  More about the Packers later (cross your fingers).

Later in the day I’ll be making Chinese cashew chicken for dinner, and decorating a cake in preparation for the real Thanksgiving dinner on Friday.  More fun and more people for that, and then Saturday heading up to Whidbey.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Not Actually About Love

Several weeks ago, a bunch of us went to see Spamalot at the Paramount. I highly recommend it; they kept all the really funny bits from Holy Grail and left out the not-so-funny bits. And there were lots of great songs. So if you get a chance, go and see it.

But that’s not my story. This is my story: In the program, there was an advert for a new musical: The Color Purple. The advertisement declared that The Color Purple is “the musical about love.” And we realized that for all of these years,  we had been thinking that our favorite musicals were about love, when they were, in fact, about something else entirely. Consider:
