Doodle Day

Here’s a special Happy New Year doodle: fireworks!

Fireworks

The explosions in the sky in this doodle are based off of ones I did several years ago for a drama poster. Our theatre department put on “You Can’t Take it With You” and one of the characters was really into fireworks. It was a pretty good show. Ever since then, I’ve made firework explosions look like the ones here. And the firework is supposed to be a Chinese style firework, not necessarily the kind you buy in the little roadside stands around the Fourth of July.

Snow for Christmas!

We arrived safely in Kansas City last night after a bit of an adventurous trip, including a 2-hour delay on our flight.  Thankfully, it was a direct flight, so there were no missed connections, and it was pretty quick.

And there’s snow here!  Here’s proof:

Time for another doodle:

Root Beer

Root beer is my favorite type of soda. The first time I had it was probably around Christmas. We used to drink it when we had smorgasbord on Christmas Eve, as all good Swedes do. We never had lutfisk, though. I guess maybe we weren’t that good of Swedes.

I like the kind of root beer that comes in bottles best; we had that kind at our wedding reception. But the root beer in the glass here looks pretty good. It’s all fizzy at the top, and there’s a bendy straw! The napkin seems inadequate to catch the drips, though.

Book Review: Elantris

Boy, it’s been awhile since I did a book review. I haven’t read too many new things recently, so that’s my excuse. I’m also going to blame grad school. But now I’ve read a book that I really liked and want to review. So here goes!

Elantris was written by Brandon Sanderson, who is going to be writing the final book in the Wheel of Time series. I’m not a fan of the Wheel of Time. I tried it, I really did. But it just never really seemed to end. I guess that’s kind of obvious; it is on book 12 now, after all. And several of the characters were really annoying. Think Wesley Crusher in early Star Trek:TNG, but worse. But Elantris is not like the Wheel of Time.

The Hobbit is going to be a movie!

Posted by Adrienne on December 20, 2007 under Books, TV & Movies | 1 Comment

The movie people finally got smart and decided to make “The Hobbit” into a movie. Not only that, but they’ve gotten Peter Jackson to direct. This makes me very, very, very happy. Ecstatic, even.

I am so glad they got Jackson back to direct it. His vision of the LOTR trilogy was spot-on, and he’s sure to bring back many of the technical people who made Middle-Earth come alive in the trilogy. I’m really hoping for three particular actors to return: Andy Serkis (Gollum), Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and Hugo Weaving (Elrond). Apart from those three, I have no opinion on the rest of the cast, aside from wanting it to be awesome. It would also be kind of cool if they gave Orlando Bloom a cameo in the Mirkwood bits, but it wouldn’t really be necessary. I don’t need Ian Holm to be Bilbo again. He did a fantastic job in “Fellowship,” but he’s too old to be Bilbo in this installment. Just find somebody that looks like him and can act well, and we’re good to go. Alisha thought it would be cool to have John Rhys-Davies be Gloin (Gimli’s father – ironic, see?), and while I agree that it would certainly be neat, I think it highly unlikely.

Regardless of casting decisions, location decisions or music decisions (but seriously, why would you NOT bring back Howard Shore?), I think we can be pretty confident that The Hobbit is going to be a fantastic piece of cinematic entertainment. I’m excited to discuss it with my friends, like we did with LOTR (admittedly, it won’t be as easy; we’re not in college anymore, so we don’t have as much time on our hands, and we don’t live just down the hall from each other either). I’m excited to read rumors and see pictures online (not spoilers, though!). But mostly, I’m excited for another quality story, told in a fresh way by somebody who loves and respects the original.

I’m going to go get my copy of “The Hobbit” and read it again. You should too.
