Book Count = 15

I think the best thing that I can say about The Time Traveller’s Wife is that I stayed up until 4 in the morning on a Wednesday to finish it. I could not stop reading this book. And there’s a librarian in it, and he’s cool. And there’s time travel, as you might possibly have guessed. Yeah, it’s a pretty good one.

This was an actual conversation I had

<Phone Rings

Me: This is the library, how can I help you?

Patron: Is this the reference desk?

Me: No, this is the circulation desk, the reference librarian is gone for the evening.

Patron: Is there someone in the computer lab who can help me?

Me: There’s someone down there right now, but if it’s a computer question I can try to help you.

Patron: Well, I’m using Word and I want to put in Roman numerals, and I checked in the symbols and I didn’t see anything there.

Me: Um, Roman numerals are just made up of regular letters, like X and I and V. If you type those in, you should be fine.

Patron: But the capital “i” is just a line, and I need it to have the lines on the top and the bottom!

Me: What font are you using?

Patron: Arial.

Me: Try using a different font, like Times New Roman, and then type the letters in.

Patron: Times New Roman? Let me try that.

<A few seconds of silence

Patron: Wow! That worked great, thanks!

Me: You’re welcome.

<Hang up

Wow. Just wow. This must be what it’s like to do a reference desk shift at a public library.

Book Count = 14

I was sick for a little more than a week, which is why there was little posting on the blog. But the sickness didn’t keep me from reading, so the book count has jumped a little bit. Keep reading for a quick run-down of the 5 books I read.

Doodle Day

Once again, it’s time for another doodle. Without further ado, here it is:

Stewart Rocks Out

This is my take on all those iPod ads that were all over the place a few years ago. They stayed on our Seattle buses for a looooooong time. Apple would have sold more of those things if they had had Stewart advertising them (not that they needed the help), because, apparently, penguins are pretty good dancers. Good enough that they made a movie about it, which I never got around to watching. Oh well. It’s not like the movie’s going anywhere.

I don’t own an iPod; I own a Gigabeat, which is made by Toshiba. It has a better screen and a better control than an iPod (that wheel thing is absolutely terrible – that’s why I decided to go with something that has a d-pad). It’s a little bigger than the iPod, but it holds a lot of music and it plays back really well. So if you’re not so keen on Apple, but you want an MP3 player, take a look at the Gigabeat.

Way to Go, Dave!

Like every other Mariner fan who grew up in the Northwest, I have a plethora of memories of hearing Mr. Dave Niehaus’ voice describe the action on the field on many a warm summer evening. Yes, even in Oregon we had good ol’ Dave to bring us all the plays from the ballpark (on 1360 KUIK…oh yeah, good times.) Dave came along on many a car ride, followed my dad as he carried around a small black transistor radio while doing chores around the house on Saturdays, and he even was in the shower with me a few times, after I got that sweet little shower radio for Christmas.

So I’m incredibly pleased to see that Dave won the Ford C. Frick Award for achivement in broadcasting. It means he’s going to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown! Whoo-hoo! I think that Niehaus is a great choice for this award; he has a great style of speaking, clearly loves the game of baseball, and his many catchphrases are a joy to hear: “fly, fly away!” for a home run, “Get out the rye bread and the mustard, Grandma!” for a grand slam (or “grand salami,” as he would call it) and “My Oh My!” for any great play.

Congratulations, Dave, and may you see many more fly away down at Safeco Field.
