I am applying for a librarian job! It’s pretty exciting but a bit stressful, mostly because a big part of the job is working with the Business and Economics department, and I don’t know much about business or economics (at least, not yet). To remedy this, I decided to start reading some business books, in the hope that I would learn some things that would help me speak intelligently about business in the event that I get interviewed for the job. Books number 3 and 4 for the 2009 book count are both business books.

To me, this picture sums up Charleston:
The church steeple, the old brick wall, and especially the palmetto tree (right in the middle of the greenery) are all symbols of one of the most historic cities I’ve ever visited. Charleston is nicknamed “Holy City” because of all the churches, and there’s a law prohibiting skyscrapers in the downtown area, so as not to block the steeples. The steeple in this picture belongs to St. Philip’s church. One of South Carolina’s symbols is the palmetto tree, and Charleston itself is full of sites on the National Register of Historic Places. There are probably more such sites in the city of Charleston than in the entire state of Washington! So all of this was running through my mind as we walked through Philadelphia Alley late in the day, and I saw this scene. I knew immediately that it would make a great photo!

The Mariners have signed Ken Griffey, Jr. to a one year contract. He will probably be the designated hitter and might – *might* – get a little time in left field.
This makes me very happy. Let’s be clear: I’m aware that it is not 1995 or 1997. Junior’s older now and he won’t be the player I remember watching in middle school. However, I think he can still hit the ball well, and playing in SAFECO Field (also known as The House That Griffey Built, and not just by me) with its short right field porch will probably help Junior to a couple more dingers – maybe I’ll even get to see one this year, that would be sweet.
Quite apart from Junior’s on-field performance is the feel-good aspect of the story. That Junior decided to return to Seattle to finish his career shows, I think, that his heart is in the right place. He understands that he had something special here, and in today’s mercenary sports world, having a player who shows some loyalty is a nice change.
In a perfect world, Seattle would get its own version of “The Natural” starring Ken Griffey, Jr. and the 2009 Seattle Mariners. I’m certainly hoping for that.

Ken Griffey, Jr is coming back to Seattle! It’s a little different sort of coming home than depicted in this mural from Safeco Field. It’s also a bit odd to call Seattle “home” for Griffey, given the news earlier this week that he was about to sign with Atlanta because it’s closer to his family and current home in Orlando. But, for Mariners fans, Seattle is his home, and it is definitely where he made a name for himself. I only got to see him once, when Milwaukee visited Cincinnati in July of ‘07, so I’m definitely looking forward to seeing him at least a few more times (already have tentative plans for at least 6 M’s games this year). I can only imagine what it must be like for some of the younger players who grew up idolizing Griffey to now have a chance to play with one of the greatest baseball players of all time.

The MLS season kicks off on March 19th, about four weeks from now. It still feels like a long way away, but things really are coming together for the Sounders, and those four weeks will probably go by very quickly.
