Go Sounders Go!

Last week’s doodle seems to have brought the Sounders good luck, so I figured I’d better do another. Here’s to another great result! COME ON YOU SOUNDERS!

Photo of the Week: Chrysler Building at Night

The Chrysler Building in New York is a great example of art deco architecture. And it looks really cool when lit up at night:

From New York City, New York

I like all of the other lights in the background; this picture was taken at dusk from the top of the Empire State Building, and the lights stretched off into the distance from just about every vantage point. It was super cool. I also really like the way the top of the Chrysler Building looks, the way it’s shaped and the pattern of lights on the top, especially the rounded bits.  Most things from the art deco period look cool like this, but most of them aren’t quite as big as the Chrysler Building!

Brilliance and Euphoria: Your 2009 Seattle Sounders FC

It was kind of like the movies, it was so perfect.  Full stadium, loud crowd, no rain. And most importantly, the result: Seattle Sounders FC 3, New York Product Placements Red Bulls 0. From the pregame ceremonies to the postgame stop at Dick’s for milkshakes, I had a fantastic, brilliant time. This is easily in my top 5 sporting events, along with my two Mariner playoff wins and that Monday Night Football game that the Seahawks won against Favre and Green Bay in the snow a few years ago. I realize not every Sounders match is going to be quite as emotional and intense as this one, but it’s certainly a good start.

Photo of the Week: University of Cincinnati

From Cincinnati, Ohio

This may seem like an odd choice for a photo, but I was having trouble thinking of something thematic for March Madness. I really wish I had taken a picture of Madison Square Gardens when we walked past it last May (as that is where the NIT finals will be this year and where the Big East Conference championship was last weekend). Though I suppose that probably wouldn’t have been a very interesting picture.
Unfortunately, this picture is even more of a stretch for two reasons. Cincinnati didn’t even make the NCAA tournament (nor did they make the NIT or CBI). And this is their football field, which for all I know could be covered in snow (speaking of which, we had snow this past Sunday, March 15. Crazy!).

Well, really, I have no answer to quibbles like that. Though it seems remotely relevant to highlight a Big East school when the Big East became the first conference ever to land 3 #1 seeds in the tourney.

More interesting, however, is that this field is depressed. No, not that sort of depressed. It sits well below ground level. Of course ground level changes over parts of the University of Cincinnati campus, but as you walk up to the stadium from the sides, you find yourself at the top row of seats. You can kind of see it in the upper left. The brick columns in the nearby building there are at ground level.
