Saturday’s Sounders match was the most frustrating that I’ve attended so far. I was disappointed in the play of the Sounders; they had a fair number of good chances that they couldn’t score on. But I was extremely frustrated and angry with the play of Columbus.
Let’s talk a bit about Seattle first. Read more…

On my return from backpacking in the Olympics this past weekend, I dropped off Caleb in Poulsbo. On the way, we drove through Bremerton and saw, among other things, at least one aircraft carrier. A cursory internet search indicates it may have been the USS Kitty Hawk. Whichever carrier it was, it reminded me of two different carriers I recall seeing in my life. I don’t remember much about the first one, but old photos tell me it was in Seattle in 1994, it was probably the USS Abraham Lincoln, and I got to walk on the deck.
More recently, however, we saw the USS Yorktown, docked at Patriots Point in Charleston, South Carolina, less than a mile away from the hotel we stayed at. We didn’t take the time to tour it (there were plenty of other things to see and do in Charleston), but we did get to see it from the shore, and also from the Fort Sumter ferry as it navigated around the large ship.

This weekend is the big reason why I absolutely hate interleague play in baseball. See, this weekend, the Giants are coming to Seattle to play the Mariners, and because I root for both teams, I’m all conflicted inside.

The Oregon coast is full of beautiful scenes, but this one is thought to be the most photographed:
Heceta Head is a beautiful lighthouse. The bright white walls and red roofs, the lovely blue water and the dramatic rocks all make for a wonderful picture. You can take tours of the lighthouse itself and even go up inside it, all the way to the top. And you can stay in the Assisstant Keeper’s House, which is now a bed and breakfast (and isn’t in this picture, but it’s still really nice). Heceta Head is a working lighthouse, so if you go by at night, you’ll see its light shining out to sea. So cool!

The month of May has not been kind to the Mariners and the Sounders. 10 losses for the Mariners and 2 draws for the Sounders mean that there have not been nearly enough victories for me this month. While it’s tough to follow two teams at the same time, it’s even tougher to follow two teams that are going through rough patches at the same time. And after both teams had such great starts to the season, it makes these last two weeks even more distasteful to me, and I’m sure, most sports fans in Seattle.
