This week’s photo requires you to look really closely at the sign. Go ahead, take your time:
This sign is located along the road on the east coast of Taiwan and is extremely confusing for English speakers. I’m sure it was unintentional, but any Westerner navigating by the sign could easily get lost. As you can see, the text under the Chinese character says “Nouth.” So which direction is it pointing? North? Or South?

On Tuesday, the Sounders came from behind to beat Houston 2-1 in overtime, guaranteeing themselves a spot in the US Open Cup Final. It was a hard-fought, epic contest, and easily the most exciting soccer match we’ve been to so far.
The match was played in tiny intimate Starfire Sports Complex. This was the same place we went for the last USOC match but instead of standing in the grandstands on the east side of the stadium, we were told that our tickets gave us space on one of the sets of temporary bleachers that had been set up. After walking about 3/4 of the way around the pitch and not seeing much space, we ended up right next to the crazy ultra fans, the Emerald City Supporters. There was a set of temporary bleachers to the left of the ECS section in the covered grandstand, and we were able to squeeze up to the top seats. The ECS folks had spilled over on to these bleachers, so we had a lot of the ultras around us.
It soon became clear that this was going to make our match experience VERY different from previous ones. Read more…

Tonight was the best Sounders match we’ve seen yet. It was a great comeback 2-1 win in overtime to get Seattle to the US Open Cup Final. We were there at Starfire for the whole game and had an awesome time. A more in-depth blog post will have to wait though, as I am too beat from standing, singing, chanting and wildly waving a flag to write an extended post. Look for more info (no pictures, sorry) soon!

Mount Rainier is not the only majestic peak in Rainier National Park. The Tatoosh Range is a neat set of mountains as well. Take a look:
This picture was taken from the region around the base of Rainier called “Paradise.” Rainier National Park is full of great names, like Tatoosh and Ohanepecosh, Paradise and Sunrise, and Frying Pan Glacier and Unicorn Creek. It’s also a great place to visit, hike and camp. Check out more information at the Official National Park website here.

Will in the World: How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare by Stephen Greenblatt
rating: 3 of 5 stars
This book is a fascinating biography of William Shakespeare. Greenblatt uses the best record of the Bard that we have – his plays and poems – to etch a convincing portrait of the greatest playwright of all time. Of course, we won’t ever be able to know for sure what caused Shakespeare to write what he did, and Greenblatt acknowledges this time and again in the text. However, his use of primary documents from the time, along with records of events in and around Stratford and London do make his ideas more plausible than some of the theories posited by other Shakespeare biographers.
Greenblatt’s treatment of the Bard is readable and interesting (although the chapters are a little long) and it made me want to read the plays and poems again, or visit London and the new Globe for a performance of Romeo and Juliet.
