February is over, and I “only” read 7 books – well, February is the shortest month, so I think that’s understandable. What matters is that I enjoyed the books, right? And for the most part, I did. Here are some more reviews!
The Chronoliths by Robert Charles Wilson
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
In 2021, a gigantic memorial appears out of nowhere in the middle of Thailand. The text on the memorial refers to a great battle fought there and a victorious general “Kuin” and gives a date: December 21, 2041 – 20 years in the future. How did the memorial get there? Who is this Kuin? Can he really send objects through time?

Iconic:
The Statue of Liberty is one of those landmarks that you see so often on TV and in the movies, that it’s always kind of a shock when you see it in person.

More books! The first is a re-read – I also read it for the 2008 Book Count:
Mistborn: The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
To read my 2008 review, click here.
I enjoyed Mistborn just as much on this second reading. I particularly noticed how Sanderson’s “Allomancy” – that is, using metals to gain super powers – was a) really creative and b) a well-defined system that followed the rules that Sanderson lays down early in the book.
I remembered a few plot points from my first reading, but not many. This is important, because the mystery and suspense Sanderson builds are crucial to enjoying the book. There were several time when it was tough to put down! I have purchased the second and third books in the series, so you can expect to see them in the count soon.

This tall white steeple belongs to St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston, SC.
Many modern churches don’t come with steeples. Most of the churches we have in the Pacific Northwest are not very ornate, and few of them have steeples like this. So it was fascinating to walk through Charleston and see the many different steeples that belong to its churches. And since Charleston has a law that prohibits building skyscrapers in its downtown area, the steeples are the tallest structures around. It was fun to try and orient ourselves based on the steeples, and to see them pop up in the backgrounds of our pictures once we got home.
