Photo(s) of the Week: The Peace Arch
Last week’s photo showed the border between Canada and the US at Michigan/Ontario. This week is the border at Washington/British Columbia, which doesn’t have a body of water to help distinguish between one side and the other:

This is the Peace Arch, as seen from the American side of the border. The small stone obelisk in the lower right of the photo shows the actual border line at the 48th parallel. Also, the flags on top are the American and Canadian flags, each on their respective country’s side.

Here is the Peace Arch from the Canadian side of the border. Each side of the arch has a different motto on it. The Canadian side, pictured here, says “Brethern dwelling together in unity,” while the American side says “Children of a common mother.” Both are neat statements, and they testify to the relative ease with which it is possible to cross from Canada to the United States and back. Just don’t forget your passport! (we didn’t, thankfully!)
