Photo(s) of the Week: Wembley and the Games

The Games of the 30th Olympiad are now taking place in London! We visited one of the many Olympic venues during our trip to London last year:

From Wembley Stadium

Wembley Stadium will be the site of the Olympic Football (Soccer, for us Americans) Final. This is the third time London has hosted the games: the other two London Olympics took place in 1908 and 1948. When London hosted the games in 1948, the old Wembley Stadium was home to many of the events. The current stadium pays tribute to those games:

The two plaques are very heavy and were apparently difficult to move. They now lie in protective cases on the Wembley grounds, for visitors to see. Perhaps similar memorials will be placed in London’s new Olympic Stadium once the 2012 Games are complete.
