Our seventh and last doubleheader of the season! Wow, that’s a lot of games! For this Saturday, the docket was Minnesota vs the Mariners and Chicago vs the Sounders.
Doubleheader #7 gave us something that had only happened once before this year: a disappointing Mariners game and a satisfying Sounders game. In fact, this doubleheader was sort of each team’s 2010 season (so far) in microcosm: the M’s with a hopeful beginning and a frustrating ending, contrasted with the Rave Green having a rocky start but a quality finish.

Before Doubleheader Number 6, we had only experienced one Mariners/Sounders totally victorious doubleheader. This time, we knew the Sounders were coming off of several excellent matches and were likely to continue their good form. As for the Mariners, they were the big question mark: would we be able to see one of the all-too-infrequent 2010 Mariner wins or would we witness another disappointment?

It felt like so long since we saw a Sounders win at Qwest Field in league play that Sunday’s win over the Colorado Rapids was a huge relief and an exciting three hours. We had a great evening with few clouds and warm temperatures (a little *too* warm after jumping and supporting for 90 minutes, but not as hot as other games we’ve attended). That, combined with the Sounders better form and a little luck gave us one of the best matches so far this year.

Midweek games are always exciting – they are something to look forward to during the work day, and a nice change of pace from the normal evening activities. This last week, we saw the Mariners take on Kansas City on Monday and the Sounders play in the US Open Cup semi-final against the LA Galaxy on Wednesday. We had high hopes for both games, but the week’s events turned out to be a mixed bag.

June 24, 2010, had the makings of a great birthday. First, it was a beautiful sunny day and the Mariners had an afternoon game. Three glorious hours (or so) basking in the suns rays, excellent! Second, the Mariners took the first two games from the Cubs and were going for the sweep. In this disappointing season, possible sweeps are few and far between, so it’s good luck that I would have tickets for the sweep game! Third, King Felix was on the mound for the M’s, so you can count on him giving the Seattle Nine a good chance to win. Add to these ingredients some great seats, and my family with me and it was shaping up to be a fabulous birthday.
Unfortunately, things didn’t turn out the way I wanted. Felix pitched 9 solid innings, but the Mariner offense couldn’t capitalize more than twice. They had chances, too: men on third with less than 2 outs on two separate occasions, and they didn’t score. The Cubs ultimately won in the 13th, and I had to settle with a less than stellar special day. While this sort of loss would have stung in any circumstance, the fact that it was against the Cubs and their not-at-all-classy fans and that it was on my birthday made it feel worse than all the other losses I’ve seen so far in 2010. Hopefully it will be the worst loss I see for the season and the other games we go to are victories for the Mariners.
